California Saturday, April 5, 2003 Report suggests affordable home ideas More effort needed, it says By Larry Parsons The Californian -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A new report says Fort Ord reuse officials could do much more to develop low-cost housing on the mothballed Army base. The $35,000 report commissioned by the Fort Ord Reuse Authority makes some very practical suggestions, but other recommendations would be difficult to pull off, a FORA official said Friday. "You can't do all the recommendations," said FORA executive officer Michael Houlemard. Some of the ideas are more suitable for local cities or the county, and others are "troubling or problematical," agency officials say. Still, FORA officials say they want to take a close look at the whole list. They plan to appoint three committees to review the recommendations and hold public workshops. "We want to do it interactively," Houlemard said The amount of low-cost housing to be built at Fort Ord has been a hot issue for more than a year. Last summer, U.S. Rep. Sam Farr, D-Carmel, threatened to block transfers of land from the Army to local agencies if FORA didn't do more to produce housing for average county wage earners.
