Military reaffirms cleanup promise
Senior Pentagon officials assure Upper Cape leaders they will replace
every drop of contaminated water.

When the Pentagon released a report on the Upper Cape's water quality
earlier this year, many people believed the findings were too good to be
true.

The report concluded that if officials planned wisely, drinking water
supplies once thought in peril would be plentiful through 2020.

The conclusion was so good, in fact, that local water superintendents
were concerned the military was backing away from the massive,
multimillion-dollar cleanup effort mandated by federal environmental
regulators after decades of contamination polluted the groundwater.

But during a meeting in Washington, D.C., last week, senior Pentagon
officials assured a group of Upper Cape leaders they will replace every
drop of water contaminated by chemicals creeping off the Massachusetts
Military Reservation.
