Ohio THE MANSFIELD NEWS JOURNAL Military site near Pioneer is under investigation Staff reports April 16, 2003 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SHELBY -- While students are on spring break, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will continue its environmental investigation of the old Wilkins Air Force Station. The Pioneer Career & Technology Center occupies 43 acres of 486 acres of the former Wilkins property. The Corps is working at the site through Sunday while the school is on spring break so classes are not disrupted. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said the environmental investigation, which began in 1999, poses no immediate health risk to students, staff or visitors at Pioneer. The Engineers' contractor will collect soil samples and also resample three groundwater monitoring wells on the property. Data collected will be analyzed and compiled in a report, to be reviewed by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. The Wilkins Air Force Station was operational during World War II. The U.S. government used this facility to store medical supplies, airplane parts, clothing, rations and supplies.
