Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] RAB updated on environmental cleanup projects |
Massachusetts HARVARD HILLSIDE RAB updated on environmental cleanup projects By C. David Gordon DEVENS -- The Devens Restoration Advisory Board meeting this week provided indications that environmental cleanup and restoration appear well along on two of four remaining projects. A third project has advanced almost to the point of proposed remediation, while preliminary work continues to address the fourth, most recently started, project. Peter Kaselis, the BRAC Environmental Office's new technical project manager, provided an update on environmental consulting firm Arcadis' work at the former Army airfield, the site known as Area of Contamination (AOC) 50. This site requires cleanup of parachute-cleaning fluid released years ago into groundwater to form a large plume of contamination moving from near Route 2A to the Nashua River. There is also the remnant of another plume that moved in the opposite direction, under the state road and beneath private industrial land in Ayer. Arcadis has submitted a draft "record of decision and responsiveness summary," which the state Department of Environmental Protection and the federal Environmental Protection Agency are now reviewing.
