Connecticut NEW HAVEN REGISTER Stratford breathing easier on former Army plant site Richard Weizel, Register Correspondent April 21, 2003 STRATFORD — Town officials say they are relieved an emergency meeting in Washington, D.C., with Army officials has quelled the military’s unexpected decision to try and sell the 78-acre former Stratford Army Engine Plant site to a developer instead of the town. After learning that the Army had allegedly advertised the massive Main Street property "for sale or lease," Town Manager Mike Feeney and U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-3, met with Army officials to resolve the issue. Ever since the former military engine plant closed in the mid-1990s, local officials have anticipated taking over the complex for commercial redevelopment once the Army completed removal of toxins on the site. Both Feeney and DeLauro said they expressed their concerns during the Washington meeting that the Army was now considering other options. Feeney, however, said Army officials denied trying to sell the property to a developer. Army officials could not be reached for comment. Sources said the Army had been seeking offers from a buyer who would be willing to take over the environmental cleanup, but could not find any interested parties.
