Colorado THE DENVER POST Residents at Lowry want input on asbestos By Kristi Arellano, Denver Post Business Writer May 2, 2003 Residents living at and near the former Lowry Air Force Base told development and health officials that they want a say in determining how the asbestos found near their homes will be tested for and removed. Leaders from the Lowry Redevelopment Authority, the state health department and the U.S. Air Force on Thursday evening addressed a public meeting held to discuss the discovery of asbestos-containing materials on the redevelopment site. The Colorado Department of Health and Environment last Thursday halted excavation at Lowry because asbestos-containing materials had been found on several lots where homes were being built and on lots outside some occupied homes. Residents who live in the area - generally bordered by East Eighth and East 11th avenues and Quebec Street and Uinta Way - criticized the level of communication about the issue and expressed concerns about potential heath risks. "My sons have played soccer on these lots for the last two months," said Alex Wiseman, a physician who lives in the area where asbestos was found. Wiseman said he had received a letter from his builder, MDC Holdings, which builds under the Richmond American Homes label, indicating that residents who had dogs would have a hay mat placed in their backyards until their properties were tested and cleaned. "I wouldn't have approved of this," Wiseman said. "The residents should have a say in this."
