California Shipyard progress BY MILLICENT MAYFIELD The Examiner May 2, 2003 In an attempt to streamline the progress of and provide greater local control over the redevelopment of the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard, a new single-use oversight authority is likely to be created. Assemblyman Mark Leno has penned a bill that aims to establish a new entity, the Hunters Point Shipyard Development Authority, which would be charged with overseeing the future development of the former naval base. Currently, The City's Redevelopment Agency oversees this project along with managing a slew of other city redevelopment issues. A new shipyard authority would essentially be an exact duplicate of the city's Redevelopment Agency, said Deputy City Attorney Michael Cohen. The same state-given powers and responsibilities would apply to the new authority, but its sole focus would be the shipyard.
