Colorado Lowry homeowners seeking assurances about asbestos Concerns about air, soil draw hundreds to Thursday meeting By Owen S. Good, Rocky Mountain News May 2, 2003 Nearly 300 homeowners in the Lowry Redevelopment Area packed a meeting Thursday night to learn more about the discovery of asbestos at home sites there. Homeowners in the area of the new discoveries want assurances that the air in their houses will be tested for exposure and that they will be notified about cleanup efforts.Residents also asked for more comprehensive soil testing, to be repeated in two or three years, to make sure the substance is gone. The asbestos came from buildings and pipes located at the former Lowry Air Force Base, which closed in 1994. The state announced Friday that asbestos had been discovered at 11 new and occupied home sites. A soil- and air-monitoring plan, drafted by the Air Force, the Lowry Redevelopment Authority and 15 development companies is due at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment today. Tom Markham, the LRA's executive director, said developers relied on a clean bill of health issued after the original cleanup when the base was closed.
