Wisconsin JS ONLINE Army ammo buildings to be burned By MEG JONES mjones@journalsentinel.com Last Updated: May 5, 2003 As many as 100 buildings at the Badger Army Ammunition plant near Baraboo will be burned down because of high levels of explosive contamination, the state said Monday. In a decontamination plan recently approved by the Department of Natural Resources, the agency determined the only way to demolish the buildings was by carefully burning them. The Army is decommissioning all 1,400 buildings on the 7,300-acre property in Sauk County. Most buildings will be torn down, but experts say as many as 100 have such high levels of explosive contaminants that the only way to take care of them is through burning. Those buildings are contaminated with nitrocellulose, a fine powder, and liquid nitroglycerin, which were produced at the plant and used to make ammunition. Both chemicals are highly explosive and can spontaneously ignite, posing danger to work crews, the DNR said.
