California MOUNTAIN VIEW VOICE Special report More than ten years ago, a number of complex cleanup systems were installed to treat Mountain View's polluted ground water. At the time, it seemed to many that the city's problems with toxic contamination were over. But it has recently become clear that these toxins do not go away easily; last fall, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that Mountain View's most common contaminant is more than 65 times more dangerous than thought. And over the past year, residents have become increasingly concerned about cleanup systems that pump pollutants out of the ground and into the air. Successful citizen action succeeded in shutting these systems down. Last week's story, the first in this two-part series, examined a site where a carcinogen is entering homes. This week's story focuses on where toxins go when residents lobby to keep them out of the air.
