The following was posted by Lorenz Thomas <Lorenz.Thomas@epamail.epa.gov> ______________________________________________________________ Sioux Army Depot is a FUDS about eight miles north west of Sidney, Nebraska that has areas littered with metal scrap from earlier OB/OD operations. when it was an active depot. Areas outside of the OB/OD pits have as much as 1,200 to 1,400 pounds of ordnance scrap per 100' X 100' foot grid. There has been UXO recovered from a 3,000 ' radius of the disposal pits. Practices in the past when the depot was an active base were similar to lighting a string of fire crackers. Not all of them go off and the ones that didn't explode are scattered around the pits. The Army is presently funding a ground survey of the area with some removal and disposal but they have been limited in their response by low funding. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ | |
