Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] Fort Lee, Va DEQ to hold meeting on landfill site remediation |
Virginia THE HOPEWELL NEWS Fort Lee, Va DEQ to hold meeting on landfill site remediation By MARK DORROH July 9, 2003 Two waste sites at Fort Lee will be the subject of a public information/input meeting later this month. The Fort Lee Environmental Management Office (FLEMO) and Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) have scheduled a public meeting for July 17 to discuss with the public results of a Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study on Fort Lee’s “Landfill 10.” Also, in a news release, the FLEMO states “The planned process for addressing the Pesticide Mixing Site (PM Site) will be discussed briefly. A No Further Action Decision Document will be prepared for PM Site soil. Groundwater contamination will be addressed in conjunction with the former fire station site.” Devlin Harris is a remedial project manager for the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). He said the two sites don’t present any immediate threat to humans or the environment. On a scale of one to 10, he said, “This would be down toward the ‘two’ end of the scale.” “One of the sites is where mixing of batches of insecticide was done, by the old fire station. The barrels were rinsed out there and the rinse water was poured into an ‘aggregate trench,’” Harris said. Since the trench was unlined, the residue would have sunk into the ground, but fortunately, the water table is more than two dozen feet below the surface in that area, according to Harris. The pesticide residue dumping was done in the years before 1970, before either the Environmental Protection Agency or the state DEQ had been created. The aggregate trench would have been closed in the early 1970s, but Harris said issues of contamination, soil removal and groundwater were still at of interest to state and federal agencies, as well as the Army.
