The following was posted by Hugh S. Sease III <HSSeaseIII@Comcast.net> __________________________________________________________ Ironic that the people who want the Navy to stop bombing and leave, celebrate by shooting flares, roman candles, and burning cars. Now that they have the place, what will they do with it? It has not been cleaned up so it is not usable for anything at the moment. It will not be cleaned up for years to come because it will require a major effort and hundreds of millions of dollars over 10 or 15 years, and it still will not be useful for anything but hiking on marked trails. At what price did they gain this piece of unusable land? They got rid of the Navy, the major employer in PR. Now that the range is closed there is no reason for the Navy to maintain a base at Roosevelt Roads. There goes the major employer, and all the money. Now what? Let's see what happens over the next twenty years. I'll bet this victory costs the local economy a lot more than they will gain. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |
