Utah THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE Bill could block nuke dump By Christopher Smith July 26, 2003 WASHINGTON -- Members of Utah's congressional delegation late Friday introduced bipartisan legislation to create a new federal wilderness area in Utah's west desert within the Air Force's military aircraft training range. The bill, similar to a failed attempt last year by former Utah Rep. Jim Hansen, could also thwart deliveries of highly radioactive nuclear waste to a proposed temporary storage site on the Skull Valley Goshute Indian Reservation by removing the Cedar Mountain area as a transportation corridor. But the advertised intent of the measure, said Utah 1st District Republican Rep. Rob Bishop, is to protect both a critical military training facility and a ruggedly beautiful and scenic landscape. "The language contained in this bill goes a long way toward protecting the national security interests of the U.S. military in being able to continue to use and overfly wilderness lands in Utah's west desert," said Bishop, the bill's sponsor. "It provides flexibility for unknown future military test and training requirements, as well as protecting wilderness and wilderness study areas to the maximum extent possible."
