California THE SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE House OKs funds to study, design Miramar project By Jeanette Steele July 29, 2003 A proposed national veterans cemetery at Miramar Marine Corps Air Station has advanced as the House of Representatives approved $2 million to plan and design the 200,000-gravesite project. The funding, part of a large appropriations bill, has to survive Senate action, and the final measure must be signed by the president. Rep. Duke Cunningham, who has championed the project, doesn't foresee problems, spokeswoman Harmony Allen said yesterday. "Duke is very confident this will be part of the final package," she said. "San Diego is such a big military community. They deserve it and need it." The House acted Friday. Officials involved with the project aren't sure of the total cost. Announced in February, the cemetery would provide needed space for burial of San Diego County veterans. Point Loma's historic Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery has been closed to casket burials for decades, leaving families to drive 90 minutes north to Riverside County to bury their veterans. [...] Some environmentalists have criticized the location because it contains sensitive habitat, including vernal pools. Government officials have said the project must pass scrutiny under the National Environmental Policy Act before going forward.
