Asbestos dirt to be replaced at Lowry
Plan up for discussion at public meetings
By Kristi Arellano

Workers will remove asbestos-contaminated dirt from Lowry and replace it
with new soil under a cleanup plan made public Monday.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has proposed a
plan requiring that 12 inches of dirt be removed and replaced on lots
where asbestos-containing material is found on top of the soil at the
former Air Force Base.

If asbestos is found beneath the surface, workers will remove and
replace 18 to 24 inches of soil. Asbestos more than 2 feet underground
will not be considered a threat, according to the plan. Public comments
will be taken at two meetings Wednesday.

"If there is any contamination deeper than 18 inches, the likelihood of
exposure is very much reduced," said Howard Roitman, director of the
health department's environmental programs.

The health department, the Lowry Redevelopment Authority, the Air Force
and builders on the site have been meeting to come up with testing and
cleanup plans since asbestos-containing materials were discovered on the
site in April.

The asbestos, which is in the neighborhood generally bordered by East
Eighth and East 11th avenues, Quebec Street and Uinta Way, was traced to
a hospital complex that was demolished decades ago.
