Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] Environmental groups want to slow MMR lease process |
Massachusetts THE UPPER CAPE CODDER Environmental groups want to slow MMR lease process By Doreen Leggett / dleggett@cnc.com Wednesday, August 6, 2003 The old adage, "Haste makes waste," is taking on a deeper meaning for a coalition of environmental groups. Groups like the Association to Preserve Cape Cod believe that fast-tracking the Army's lease, for the National Guard, on the Massachusetts Military Reservation is a mistake when there are still a number of unanswered questions. At a press conference held on the Hyannis Green Tuesday, Maggie Geist, executive director of APCC, said that the governor's plans to extend the lease from 2026 to 2051 was premature especially since it is unclear if the new environmental safeguards in place for military training are adequate. And, she noted, all four Upper Cape towns have yet to sign an agreement with the government regarding new drinking water supplies. (The Pentagon has committed to replacing some of the water that was contaminated by past training activities on the base.) "There is no need to rush," Geist, flanked by members of the Sierra Club, League of Women Voters, and Orenda Wildlife Trust, said. "It just doesn't make sense."
