Massachusetts THE CAPE COD TIMES Crews digging in at Otis spill site Effort under way to contain jet fuel overflow, remove polluted soil. By Amanda Lehmert August 18, 2003 CAMP EDWARDS - Crews have a long weekend ahead, digging up contaminated soil from Monday's 480-gallon jet fuel spill. Fuel overflowed from vents in a 10,000-gallon storage tank and into a concrete secondary containment system when a pump that transfers fuel from one tank to the other didn't automatically shut off, Massachusetts Military Reservation officials said. The release became worse after a worker thought the liquid in the concrete containment area was water and released it into a catch basin that drains into the ground, said Richard Packard, chief of the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection's emergency response section in Lakeville. The fueling station, west of the Route 28 rotary off the main military reservation gate, services the ground vehicles at Army National Guard's Camp Edwards. A worker checks up on the site two to three times a day. On Monday, the worker checked the four-tank fuel point and noticed an audible alarm. Packard said the employee did not know the alarm signified a fuel release.
