County board targets Navy
By Mike Voss
Thursday, August 21, 2003

Believing there's strength in numbers, the Beaufort County Board of
Commissioners on Wednesday joined its Washington County counterpart in
adopting a resolution concerning possible legal action to prevent the
Navy from building an outlying land field in Beaufort County or
Washington County.

The resolution was approved unanimously by the Beaufort County board
just after 5 p.m., about the same time the Washington County Board of
Commissioners adopted a similar resolution.

The last part of the resolution reads: "Now, therefore, be it resolved
the Beaufort County Board of Commissioners joins with the Washington
County Board of Commissioners in coordination to actively oppose an OLF
facility that negatively impacts either county, and agrees to mutually
receive and review proposals from law firms to consider possible legal
action to prevent the Department of the Navy from constructing an OLF in
Beaufort (County) or Washington County."

A draft resolution was developed by a committee comprising two
commissioners from each county. Hood Richardson and the Rev. David Moore
represented Beaufort County, while Wesley Stokes and Billy Corey
represented Washington County. That draft resolution was amended before
the Beaufort County board voted to approve it Wednesday.

The resolution reflects both boards' belief that legal action will be
needed to fight the Navy's plan to build an OLF in Washington County,
bordering northeast Beaufort County, if the acting Navy secretary issues
a decision of record saying the OLF is necessary.
