North Carolina THE FAYETTEVILLE OBSERVER Goals to sustain region announced By Nomee Landis August 28, 2003 Goals aimed at sustaining Fort Bragg's mission and the region's vitality were unveiled during a conference Wednesday at the Officers' Club. The goals - related to land use, air quality, water, solid waste and energy - will help guide dozens of people working to implement the Sustainable Sandhills initiative. Fort Bragg's leadership, along with Bill Ross, the secretary of the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources, introduced the initiative in February. Its purpose is to help solve environmental problems, such as air pollution, that could ultimately hurt training on Fort Bragg and economic development in the region. The concept of sustainability moves beyond the region, though. It is an ideal that involves the use of natural resources without exhausting them. Ross said Wednesday ''it is the most important issue of our time." The world is being transformed, he said. More and more people are using or abusing more of the earth's resources at a faster rate than at any other time in history. Doing so is unsustainable.
