Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] October 2 Meeting on Vapor Intrusion in L.A. area |
INFORMATION MEETING: TOXIC GASSES IN L.A. AREA HOMES, SCHOOLS AND OFFICES THURSDAY, OCTOBER 2 • 7:30 - 10:00 PM ANGELES ROOM • RADISSON VALLEY CENTER HOTEL 15433 VENTURA BLVD., SHERMAN OAKS (JUST WEST OF THE 405 FREEWAY) For years we assumed that contaminants in our groundwater, even volatile organic compounds (VOC), remained stable if left undisturbed. Now we know better. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recent report, "Draft Guidance for Evaluating the Vapor Intrusion to Indoor Air Pathway from Groundwater and Soils," suggests that some VOCs actually turn to gas underground and ascend into homes, offices, schools, work places, dosing inhabitants with toxic vapors. Local communities blighted by VOC groundwater contamination may be at risk. These include Burbank, Glendale, Del Amo, Azusa, Pacoima, Compton, Industry, Torrance, Downey, South Gate, Carson, Long Beach, East LA, El Segundo, Lynwood, Wilmington, Van Nuys, Sun Valley, Santa Fe Springs, Santa Clarita and Paramount. In Ventura County, the Santa Susana Field Laboratory has slopped an estimated 500,000 gallons of trichloroethylene (TCE) into the aquifer. In Riverside County, there are the communities surrounding the Stringfellow Acid Pits and Wyle Labs test facility in Norco. Who should attend? Community members. Environmental activists. Community health providers. Spanish language translation will be provided.
