Lowry cleanup spurs meeting
Air Force, resisting asbestos payments, to send rep to Colo.
By Todd Hartman
September 18, 2003

An assistant secretary for the Air Force will meet in the next two weeks
with local developers and health officials about cleanup of asbestos at
the Lowry redevelopment area in Denver.

Nelson Gibbs, assistant secretary for installation, environment and
logistics, will come to Colorado before the end of the month, according
to a spokesman for U.S. Sen. Wayne Allard, R-Colo.

Top on the discussion list: whether the Air Force will reimburse the $4
million that builders and developers have spent to deal with asbestos
contamination left over from military operations at the site. The former
Air Force base is being converted into a community of homes and
businesses.

So far, the Air Force has contested the asbestos matter, saying the
state's cleanup standards are too high. The standoff has frustrated site
developers, health officials and Colorado's congressional delegation.
