Virginia DAILY PRESS Isabel rewrites Fort Monroe history By Rick Rogers September 23, 2003 FORT MONROE -- It'll cost millions to fix Fort Monroe after Hurricane Isabel rewrote 1933 flood marks here - and some things at this historic base are beyond repair. "We're talking repairs in the tens of millions of dollars," said Col. Perry D. Allmendinger, post commander, who expects to have a better handle on the final price tag later this week. Receding floodwaters haven't revealed any unexploded ordnance at the longtime coast artillery base, Allmendinger said. An Army Corps of Engineer spokeswoman said no shells had been found at area beaches. Sometimes heavy storms can wash unexploded shells and bombs to shore. At Monroe, the costliest damage was done by floodwaters to administrative buildings and 179 sets of government-owned housing units, especially those within the moat, said Allmendinger. There was also extensive damage to roads and the seawall that runs along the Chesapeake Bay.
