Army and Anniston water works to remove chemical from water
September 26, 2003

The Army and the Anniston water works will share the estimated $3.2
million cost to build a treatment system to remove a potentially
hazardous chemical from a source of the water supply.

The agreement was reached this week, with construction expected to begin
early next year and take about nine months.

The chemical, a solvent known as trichlorethylene, or TCE, was used for
decades at the Anniston Army Depot to degrease metal and was disposed of
in ditches and lagoons, eventually entering the groundwater.

Federal health agencies say the chemical may cause liver and kidney
disorders. Trace amounts of TCE have been found in Coldwater Spring for
several years at levels below what regulators say is safe to drink for
long periods of time.

"Even though they're minuscule, there's still an upward trend," Randy
Owens, assistant general manager for the water works, told The Anniston
Star in a story Friday.
