Cape Contractors Share Risks, Rewards in Iraq By Amanda Lehmert Cape Cod Times April 2, 2004 _From his base of operations just outside the Sunni Triangle, Nicholas Iaiennaro told his wife, Gretchen, he has seen smoke rising above Fallujah, Iraq. Iaiennaro, a father of three from Hyannis, works with the Army Corps of Engineers on a mission to rid the country of leftover ordnance - a mission fueled by about 2,000 civilian contractors. The torching and mutilating of the bodies of four contractors in Fallujah Wednesday hit home for this Cape family and at the Massachusetts Military Reservation, where at least three contracting groups currently have employees overseas or will send them there soon. An unknown number of American civilians have been contracted by the U.S. government to rebuild and restore Iraq - and a handful have died or been injured doing their jobs.
