Congressman Questions Marines

Jacksonville Daily News (NC)
April 14, 2004

A Michigan congressman is asking Marine Corps officials pointed
questions about contamination at Camp Lejeune ranges and suspected
munitions dumps.

In March, U.S. Rep. John Dingell, the ranking Democrat on the House
Energy and Commerce Committee, asked Gen. Mike Hagee, commandant of the
Marine Corps, whether Camp Lejeune was testing its ranges for munitions
constituents such as TNT, RDX, HMX and perchlorate.

In 1985, the base closed wells contaminated with industrial and dry
cleaning solvents. In 1989, the EPA added Camp Lejeune to its National
Priority List, or Superfund. Restoration continues at many base sites.

In response to Dingell's questions, Hagee said that all Marine Corps
ranges soon will be assessed for compliance with environmental
regulations. The Marines will determine whether contaminants might
threaten drinking water or wildlife.

"If such potential exists, additional investigation and appropriate
sampling will be conducted," Hagee said in his response to Dingell.
