David Gordon Shirley Oracle (MA) Wednesday, April 21, 2004 - SHIRLEY -- Even as remediation of hazardous materials continues at the former Army airfield off Route 2A in Ayer, the contractor doing the cleanup has submitted a partially completed design proposal for full-phase implementation of remediation. Chuck Castelluccio, project manager for Arcadis, told the Devens Restoration Advisory Board (RAB) at the Shirley Town Offices earlier this month that a 60 percent design proposal has been submitted to the BRAC Environmental Team at Devens. Project managers from state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are on that team along with the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Office at Devens represents the Army. Two plumes of tetrachloroethylene (PCE), which was in cleaning fluid used on parachutes, have migrated in groundwater at the former airfield. The small plume migrating under Route 2A and the Merrimack Warehouse property has become an isolated small pocket of contamination. But one monitoring well in the area continues to steadily indicate PCE at a level (11 parts per billion) slightly above EPA's required five parts per billion. Arcadis proposes a one-time injection of a fast-acting ingredient to reduce PCE levels in the immediate level. As for the source area on the airfield side of Route 2A, the remediation proposal includes reactivating the soil vapor extraction system installed in this area in the 1990s. ... for the entire story, see http://www.shirleyoracle.com/Stories/0,1413,111~5843~2097994,00.html -- Lenny Siegel Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight c/o PSC, 278-A Hope St., Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650/961-8918 or 650/969-1545 Fax: 650/961-8918 <lsiegel@cpeo.org> http://www.cpeo.org =========================================================== Let University of Phoenix make 2004 your year.
