Lejeune's water said linked to girl's death

WASHINGTON -- A former Camp Lejeune Marine, who blames his daughter's
fatal illness on contaminated drinking water found in base housing areas
in the 1980s, told two congressional subcommittees Wednesday that the
Defense Department should not be exempt from major environmental laws.

Jerry Ensminger of Richlands testified before Congress concerning a
proposal seeking DoD exemptions from the Clean Air Act, Solid Waste
Disposal Act and the Superfund law.

Based on historical evidence, that would be a bad idea, Ensminger told
members of the Environment and Hazardous Material subcommittee and the
Energy and Air Quality Subcommittee. Both panels are part of the House
Energy and Commerce Committee.

Ensminger, whose daughter, Jane, died of leukemia at age 9, told House
members that the Marine Corps' five-year delay in closing wells
contaminated with two industrial solvents should make lawmakers pause
before granting the exemptions.
