Military asks for cleanup waivers
Opponents question if the Pentagon can police itself on environmental issues.

exempt the Department of Defense from key environmental laws.

At a congressional hearing last week in Washington, Pentagon and
Environmental Protection Agency officials asked that active military
ranges be exempt from a hazardous waste act, the Superfund law and the
Clean Air Act.

would not affect the current cleanup at the Upper Cape's military base,
activists warned that the degradation of the laws means certain
protections won't be available to regulators or citizens in the future.

are limited by environmental restrictions, was cited during the
testimony before the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

Department of Defense officials argued that current laws leave open the
possibility that live-fire ranges could be shut down for environmental
concerns, threatening the military's ability to train and be ready for
combat.
