By AMANDA LEHMERT Cape Cod Times April 26, 2004 For the third straight year, the Bush administration is pushing to exempt the Department of Defense from key environmental laws. At a congressional hearing last week in Washington, Pentagon and Environmental Protection Agency officials asked that active military ranges be exempt from a hazardous waste act, the Superfund law and the Clean Air Act. Although local military officials said the proposed legislative changes would not affect the current cleanup at the Upper Cape's military base, activists warned that the degradation of the laws means certain protections won't be available to regulators or citizens in the future. The Massachusetts Military Reservation, where training options currently are limited by environmental restrictions, was cited during the testimony before the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
