School's water deemed unsafe Mt. Greylock shuts its taps

WILLIAMSTOWN -- Mount Greylock Regional High School declared its water
unsafe to drink yesterday after it detected unsafe levels of the
chemical perchlorate in both of its wells.

Samples taken from one well in April and announced yesterday found
levels of perchlorate that were five times the state safety threshold.
Tests on the other well foundthechemicalinalevel slightly above the limit.

In response, the school took the most polluted well off-line and shut
off its drinking fountains. It announced that the water should not be
drunk or used for cooking, and made bottled water available to the
students, faculty and staff. Tap water was still considered safe for
bathing and flushing toilets.

Meanwhile, officials took another round of tests and rushed them to a
laboratory to confirm the initial results. Greylock Superintendent Mark
Piechota said he hopes to have those results back Tuesday.
