Environmental Solutions, an on-line newsletter of the US Army
Environmental Center.]

Perchlorate Replacement Effort

The US Army Environmental Center is making an effort to develop,
demonstrate, and implement perchlorate free energetic compositions. The
EPA considers perchlorate a "contaminant of concern" and the detection
of perchlorate at several Army facilities has led the Army to take steps
to decrease perchlorate use on training lands. Perchlorates are most
commonly used in solid propellant fuels and explosives. The Army is
focusing their replacement efforts on two munition simulators that
constitute 70% of the perchlorates used in training.

Early phases of the program focus on the development of replacement
compositions. Two perchlorate free compositions will be selected for
further testing, demonstration and validation. Organic energetics are
being developed at the Edgewood Chemical Biological Command while the
Armaments Research, Development, and Engineering Center is developing
inorganic perchlorate replacements. The three-phase program is
scheduled to conclude at the end of FY 2006 with the implementation of
perchlorate free energetics in training munitions. The information
gained from this effort will be used in other projects aimed at
decreasing perchlorate use.
