Input sought for Nike missile site cleanup

OXFORD ? While the Cold War may be a bygone relic relegated to history
books, its littered remains can be spotted today, even scattered in and
around Oxford. 

In 1995, the former Alba Craft site on West Rose Avenue, which machined
uranium in the 1950s for the United States Department of Energy, was
decontaminated following a lobbying blitz by citizens concerned about
exposure to radioactive uranium. 

Another lesser-known Cold War facility sits four miles northwest of
Oxford off Taylor Road. The Nike Missile Site CD-78, is a battery which
served to shield Cincinnati from 1959-1970. 

"They were our last line of defense to help protect the population,"
said Kimberlee Turner of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). 

The USACE and the Ohio EPA (OEPA) have recently agreed on a cleanup plan
called monitored natural attenuation (MNA) for the site which involves
reading levels of groundwater contaminants through the year 2039 along
with the removal of water-containing missile silos and underground
storage tanks. However, the plan must still garner what is termed
"community acceptance," Turner said.
