Report: Pendleton housing not feasible at El Toro

NEWPORT BEACH - Military housing at the closed El Toro Marine Corps Air
Station would be  too costly to renovate and is too far for use by Camp
Pendleton Marines, according to the  contents of a letter released today.

Rep. Christopher Cox, R-Newport Beach, said he wrote Gen. H.T. Johnson,
assistant secretary of  the Navy for Installation and the Environment,
in April about the closed station and got a  reply back last week. 

According to Cox, Johnson wrote that the houses on the former El Toro
air station "are in extremely poor condition, are too  costly to
renovate even through a Public-Private Venture, and are too far from"
the Marine Corps Base at Camp Pendleton to  be suitable for fix-up.
