Senate passes bill that may protect land around bases

Supporters of Cherry Point are hailing Thursday's Senate approval of a
proposal that could lead to the purchase of property around military
bases to prevent development around the bases.

Encroaching development that limits military training around bases is
considered strike one in the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure process.

"The military is going to realign to places where they can train and
bases that can perform joint missions," said Hugh Overholt, a retired
army general hired to lobby for Cherry Point by Allies for Cherry
Point's Tomorrow. "Preserving the land for training for joint use is
really a good step forward."

Senate Bill 1064 would allow borrowing up to $350 million in debt from
the Clean Water Management Trust Fund, $105 million from the Parks and
Recreation Trust Fund and $65 million from the Natural Heritage Trust
Fund to purchase and preserve sensitive lands around parks and military bases.
