Powell San Diego Union-Tribune June 30, 2004 The city of San Diego will soon start talks with the Navy to take possession of a polluted boat channel at the former Naval Training Center to speed up installation of a city-owned dock and the possible development of a hotel marina. Authorization to begin negotiations over transfer of the 54-acre boat channel does not obligate the city to take over the inlet unless financial terms for cleanup and other details are advantageous to the city. An agreement would have to be approved by the City Council, which voted 9-0 last night to proceed with negotiations. The boat channel is the last acreage to be transferred from the Navy to the city as part of the 361-acre Naval Training Center redevelopment project, now called Liberty Station. The project includes construction of 349 housing units, an arts and culture center, an educational district, a 49-acre park, office and retail space, and two hotels. The boot camp, located west of Lindbergh Field, closed in April 1997 after about 75 years of operation. A plan for civilian use of the property was approved by the city in October 1998. ... for the entire article, see http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/metro/20040630-9999-7m30boat.html -- Lenny Siegel Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight c/o PSC, 278-A Hope St., Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650/961-8918 or 650/969-1545 Fax: 650/961-8918 <lsiegel@cpeo.org> http://www.cpeo.org Your free subscription is supported by today's sponsor: ------------------------------------------------------------------- Apply now for a No-Annual-Fee Discover® Platinum Card 0% Intro APR*, No Annual Fee, Up to 2% Cashback Bonus® award* Start Saving Today ?
