Old SRS tanks leak atomic waste

Staff and wire reports
Carolina Morning News (SC)
July 11, 2004

Federal inspection reports show that 15 of 51 tanks holding deadly
atomic waste at the Savannah River Site are cracked, rusty or have leaked.

Recent federal inspection reports note hundreds of "leak sites," or
cracks in the steel tanks that have been used since the 1950s and 1960s
as the site helped make nuclear weapons.

The SRS borders the Savannah River, and Beaufort and Jasper counties are
located downstream from the plant. The river supplies most of the
drinking water to customers of the Beaufort-Jasper Water & Sewer
Authority, with an intake about 100 miles from the SRS.

Dean Moss, the authority's general manager, said Saturday evening that
routine testing assures that the drinking water is safe, but "of course
I'm concerned" to hear of the report about atomic waste leakage at the SRS.

In a cooperative program with the water authority, the city of Savannah
draws daily water samples at the river and U.S. 301 for safety testing.
The sample site is "about 90 hours to 100 hours ahead of our intakes, so
we have a couple days warning if there's going to be any kind of
problem," Moss said.

The SRS was built in rural South Carolina southeast of Augusta during
the Cold War to produce tritium, a radioactive form of hydrogen used to
boost the power of atomic weapons.
