EPA sues over delays in former Goodyear defense site's cleanup

A company's delays in cleaning up a polluted site in the west Valley
have brought a multimillion-dollar lawsuit from federal environmental officials.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is suing Unidynamics-Phoenix
Inc. and its parent company, Crane Co., for not following clean-up plans
for a former defense site at the Phoenix-Goodyear Airport.

The EPA is seeking $2.8 million to reimburse the expenses it drew from
the federal Superfund to pay for clean-up activities that it alleges
Crane refused to do. EPA also is seeking three times that amount in
damages, as permitted under the Superfund law. In addition, the EPA is
asking a federal judge to levy penalties of up to $32,500 a day for
Crane's delays in following EPA orders.
