Big expansion set at Charlestown park

Pagac looked at a building that will probably be preserved as a historic 
structure. The public should gain access to the new part of the park by 
late next year.

More than three miles of rugged Ohio River shoreline - including bluffs 
that afford a spectacular view - will be open to the public for the 
first time since the 1940s under an expansion of Charlestown State Park.

The property covers a total of 2,761 acres, which is more than four 
square miles. It also includes caves, wooded ravines and vast meadows.

The expansion will make Charlestown the third-largest state park in 
Indiana, with more than 5,100 acres.

A long-awaited deal with the Army is making the expansion possible. The 
terms of a lease agreement were reached recently, and it will take 
effect in about a month. The public should have access by late next year.
