Kingston school gains momentum

Plans to complete a new high school in Kingston by the fall of 2006 get a
double boost with a required permit and a clean bill of health.

The plan to build a new high school in Kingston was given two green lights
from government authorities Friday, increasing the likelihood that work can
begin this summer or fall.

A required land-use permit was granted Friday by the Kitsap County hearing
examiner. In an unrelated move, the Environmental Protection Agency issued
a report that should ease concerns about toxic pollution at the former Nike
missile site.

O'Garro, the state health official, said a number of health complaints
remain to be resolved, along with suspicions that areas of Kingston have a
high cancer rate. Health officials will prepare a risk assessment based on
chemicals found at the Nike site, he said, and experts will review cancer
records to see if any "clusters" show up. Officials will gather information
about specific health concerns, beginning with a survey form to be
distributed at the July 29 meeting.
