USS Oriskany to leave, but reef hopes not sunk

The USS Oriskany will be towed from Corpus Christi early next month, but
state officials are trying to make sure a different, larger aircraft
carrier will be brought to the Coastal Bend to stay. 

The Oriskany is a Korean War-era vessel that will be sunk and made into
an artificial reef off the coast of Pensacola, Fla. Several states
competed to get the Oriskany, but because the Navy awarded it to Florida
earlier this year, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department now is
attempting to bring in the USS Forrestal to be sunk off the coast of
Corpus Christi. 

Turning a ship into an artificial reef can create a habitat for fish and
attracts scuba divers, fishermen and marine ecologists, among others,
officials say.

The Navy also is interested in how the state would help in the process
of cleaning ships of contaminants, such as asbestos and oily solvents,
she said. Only some of the ships will be made available by application
this summer, and the rest will be made available either later this year
or next year, Dolan said. It's not clear if the Forrestal will be one of
the ships made available in the next couple of months, she said.
