The Oriskany is a Korean War-era vessel that will be sunk and made into an artificial reef off the coast of Pensacola, Fla. Several states competed to get the Oriskany, but because the Navy awarded it to Florida earlier this year, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department now is attempting to bring in the USS Forrestal to be sunk off the coast of Corpus Christi. Turning a ship into an artificial reef can create a habitat for fish and attracts scuba divers, fishermen and marine ecologists, among others, officials say. ... The Navy also is interested in how the state would help in the process of cleaning ships of contaminants, such as asbestos and oily solvents, she said. Only some of the ships will be made available by application this summer, and the rest will be made available either later this year or next year, Dolan said. It's not clear if the Forrestal will be one of the ships made available in the next couple of months, she said. ... for the entire article, http://www.caller.com/ccct/local_news/article/0,1641,CCCT_811_3058653,00.html -- Lenny Siegel Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight c/o PSC, 278-A Hope St., Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650/961-8918 or 650/969-1545 Fax: 650/961-8918 <lsiegel@cpeo.org> http://www.cpeo.org Your free subscription is supported by today's sponsor: ------------------------------------------------------------------- Save up to 67% on Omaha Steaks + Get 6 FREE Burgers and a FREE Cutlery Set + Cutting Board! http://click.topica.com/caacpgjaVxieSbnA7ruf/OmahaSteaks ------------------------------------------------------------------- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CPEO: A DECADE OF SUCCESS.
