'Green' ammo study devised
Experts are trying to determine if the bullets used at Camp Edwards could be toxic.

CAMP EDWARDS - Army environmental officials were at Camp Edwards yesterday to plot the first tests that will determine what the Army's "green" bullets do in Cape soil.

About 800,000 rounds of tungsten-nylon bullets have been used at ranges on the Massachusetts Military Reservation since the Environmental Protection Agency banned the use of lead ammunition in 1997.

Although the Army heralded the tungsten-nylon bullets as more environmentally friendly, recent research into the metal has raised questions about its toxicity and ability to move in soil.

Research into the specific ammunition used on the Cape has not yet been completed.

The Massachusetts National Guard, one of only a handful of military organizations nationwide that use the bullets, has agreed to let the Army Environmental Center, from Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland, access the base for research purposes.
