The plan is to install glove boxes, advanced ventilation systems and other technologies to better control employee exposures. Currently, Y-12 depends on "administrative controls" and personal-protection equipment - including respirators in some cases - to limit exposures in shops where the material is handled. "Safety is our No. 1 concern out here," said Scott Cannon, the project manager for the National Nuclear Security Administration. Not everyone agrees with Cannon's assessment.
