State shuts down McClellan cleanup
ADEM: Contractor not destroying old ordnance

WASHINGTON - State environmental regulators shut down a cleanup of old Fort McClellan property Friday after finding that an Army contractor was hiding, not destroying, unexploded mortar rounds.

The Alabama Department of Environmental Management issued an administrative order citing Tetra Tech FW Inc. of New Jersey with a violation of state hazardous waste law.

The company was hired as a contractor by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Huntsville to clean up the "Charlie" property of the former Fort McClellan in Calhoun County. There is still unexploded ordnance in the area, including 81 mm mortar rounds.

"When they find it, using qualified personnel, it should be destroyed - rendered safe by qualified personnel," said Stephen Cobb, chief of the government hazardous waste branch of ADEM. "In this case, it appeared some items were removed from the designated cleanup area and disposed of in another adjacent area."

The Corps of Engineers said it is cooperating with ADEM's order, which was received late Friday.
