By Kerry Cavanaugh Long Beach Press Telegram (CA) August 13, 2004 Geologists on Friday finished drilling a sampling well next to the site of a nuclear reactor meltdown at the Santa Susana Field Lab near Simi Valley as regulators stepped up their search for radioactivity in the groundwater. The new test wells are being drilled after the discovery earlier this year of the radioactive isotope tritium in groundwater at four times the national drinking water limit. Although groundwater at the site is not used for drinking, the finding prompted the Department of Energy and the Boeing Co. to begin testing near other former reactor sites to track the contamination. Geologists drilled a 90-foot-deep well about 20 feet from the site of a 1959 reactor meltdown. The accident would have released radioactive material into the surrounding environment and has also been a particular concern for clean-up watchdogs. ... for the entire article, see http://www.presstelegram.com/Stories/0,1413,204~21478~2333455,00.html -- Lenny Siegel Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight c/o PSC, 278-A Hope St., Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650/961-8918 or 650/969-1545 Fax: 650/961-8918 <lsiegel@cpeo.org> http://www.cpeo.org Your free subscription is supported by today's sponsor: ------------------------------------------------------------------- Shop online for Discount Auto Parts: Mirrors Headlights Tail Lights Bumpers Fenders Window Regulators Spoilers Altezza Lights and a Full Line of Auto Body Parts. www.partstrain.com http://click.topica.com/caacxygaVxieSbnA7ruf/Parts Train ------------------------------------------------------------------- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CPEO: A DECADE OF SUCCESS.
