Quicker Cleanup Asked, Unexploded Shells

By THOMAS M. Di-STASIO

HONESDALE - The Wayne County Commissioners agreed Tuesday to issue
letters to state and federal legislators to see if the process of
removing potential unexploded ordnances from Tobyhanna State Park can be
sped up.

Chairman Anthony Herzog said Tuesday that he attended a meeting at
Gouldsboro Volunteer Fire Company on August 14 with PA Department of
Environmental Protection and the US Army Corps of Engineers. The meeting
was designed to inform property owners in the Lake Watawga area
(Lakeview Estates Development) about the ongoing investigation of
unexploded munitions at the former Tobyhanna Artillery Range.

Herzog said that the area is being cleaned up with contractors and that
smaller unexploded pieces have been found near the State Park. He said
that even though no ordnances have been found in Wayne County, the
proximity of Lakeview Estates to the Monroe County border is a reason
for concern.
