Army conducts tour of remaining cleanup sites in Devens

DEVENS -- The highlight of this year's Devens Restoration Advisory Board
(RAB) tour of Devens environmental cleanup sites was the cleanup
underway at the former Army airfield.

The BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure) Environmental Office at the
Devens Reserve Forces Training Area organized the third annual tour,
which focused on cleanup operations at each of the four sites visited on
the tour.

Remediation of CERCLA/Superfund sites at Devens involved a careful check
of 325 identified sites, with 294 approved or expected to be designated
as requiring no further action. Of the remaining sites, 19 are
undergoing active remediation, seven sites have been placed on hold
pending further evaluation, and five sites are undergoing site evaluations.

The former airfield is the location of a plume of chlorinated solvents
running from a source area next to Fitchburg Road, Route 2A, in
groundwater beneath the former runways to a point over 1,500 feet away
at the Nashua River. Project Engineer David Falatko of the firm charged
with remediation, Arcadis G&M, Inc., was the tour guide through three
different procedures the company is carrying out.
