Tests find possible sources of chemical in Tewksbury water

Tests conducted last week for the state environmental agency have
located potential sources of the chemical perchlorate, which has been
found in the Tewksbury drinking water supply at levels above what the
state considers safe.

The state Department of Environmental Protection released the results of
tests conducted last week along the Merrimack River from the New
Hampshire border to Lowell, and at water treatment plants in Tewksbury,
Andover, Lowell, Methuen, and Lawrence.

Further tests along the Concord River and near some industrial sites
will begin next week, said Ed Kunce, deputy commissioner of the department.

Perchlorate was found in water samples tested between Aug. 18 and 25 at
a Dracut business, at Lowell's wastewater treatment plant, and in the
area where the Concord and Merrimack rivers meet, according to a
department report.
