UXO cleanup will resume

The Army says it has reached an ?agreement in principle? with the
Alabama Department of Environmental Management to resume clearance of
unexploded ordnance at McClellan and resolve the state's order accusing
the Army and its contractor of illegally hiding munitions instead of
destroying them.

The agreement does not impose a fine, reduces the area that the Army
must re-investigate for UXO, and would allow contractor Tetra Tech-FW
(formerly Foster Wheeler) to complete cleanup work under its contract at McClellan.

ADEM issued an emergency administrative order July 30 stopping the
Army's UXO cleanup at McClellan, alleging that Tetra Tech-FW employees
had removed munitions from the National Wildlife Refuge and hid them a
short distance away behind trees and under leaves and dirt.
