U.S. sends Norco back to the state WYLE: California handles health studies, and the federal agency provides funding, an official said. By PAIGE AUSTIN Riverside Press-Enterprise (CA) September 18, 2004 NORCO - The federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry announced Friday that it will deny Norco's request for a health study that could determine whether a cancer cluster exists near Wyle Labs. The agency deferred to the California Department of Health Services, which is already working to educate local physicians about the health effects of toxic chemicals and to arrange stress counseling for the neighbors of the Wyle facility, where a plume of underground pollution has migrated off the property. The state agency has not yet committed to doing a health study. Wyle Labs executives have maintained that there is no link between the pollution and health problems experienced by people who live near the facility. On Friday, the company announced that it has stopped all of its testing activities and is getting ready to relocate to the former Norton Air Force Base. For nearly 50 years, Wyle Labs conducted hazardous tests on missiles, rockets and commercial products in Norco.
