House passes bill for groundwater cleanup in Santa Clara Valley
WASHINGTON - The House of Representatives on Tuesday passed a bill to spend $25 million cleaning up groundwater in the Santa Clara Valley that's contaminated with perchlorate. "Hundreds of private and city-owned wells have been closed and many residents are forced to rely on bottled water," said Rep. Richard Pombo, R-Tracy, who sponsored the legislation. The Santa Clara Valley Water District last year discovered perchlorate in its groundwater basin, which serves some 80,000 residents of Morgan Hill, Gilroy and an unincorporated community in between. Cleanup costs have been estimated between $2 million and $150 million. … for the entire article, see http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/news/local/states/california/counties/alameda_county/9722351.htm -- Lenny Siegel Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight c/o PSC, 278-A Hope St., Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650/961-8918 or 650/969-1545 Fax: 650/961-8918 http://www.cpeo.org
